In the quarterfinals of the Champions League, Chelsea will play Real Madrid, the current champions. Graham Potter’s team defeated Borussia Dortmund to advance to the round of eight, while Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid defeated Liverpool.

Bayern Munich, the manager Pep Guardiola’s old team, was drawn to face Manchester City, who are unbeaten in this season’s competition. The semifinal matchup between Chelsea and City, if both make it that far, will be a rematch of the 2021 final, which Chelsea won by a score of 1-0. The remaining matches in the draw pit Benfica against Inter and AC Milan against Napoli in a Serie A clash.

The fact that the Italian clubs were all kept on the same side of the line made for an intriguing draw. The only team preventing an Italian finalist since Juventus in 2017 is Benfica. Real Madrid, Man City, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich—repeat winners and holders—kept the more recent finalists all on the same team.

In the end, everything depends on the loan agreement and whether Man City has included a clause to ban him from playing against them since he went on loan to Bayern Munich in January. If so, Joao Cancelo would have to skip their encounter if their Champions League opponents were paired together. The right-back could play in the tie, though, if there is no clause.

For Chelsea, it’s a rematch of their quarterfinal matchup with Real Madrid from the previous year, when they were eliminated in dramatic manner after extra time. After losing 3-1 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in Madrid, only for Rodrygo’s late goal to force extra time.

Sporting Lisbon, who eliminated Arsenal in the round of 16, after winning a penalty shootout at the Emirates, won’t make it easy for Juventus. Other quarterfinal matchups included Feyenoord vs. AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen vs. Union SG.
