The Call of Duty franchise is the most popular in the gaming business, with each year’s top-selling game. The same appears to be true for Sledge Games’ addition to the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard, 2021. The fact that Call of Duty: Vanguard is the best-selling game isn’t surprising, but it comes at an odd time for Activision, when recently Microsoft announced the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for $68.7 Billion. Vanguard was the best-selling game in December and for the entire year, marking the 13th year in a row that the series has been the best-selling game franchise in terms of dollar sales. Halo Infinite was the second best-selling game overall in December and the best-selling Xbox game. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl was the third best-selling game in December and the best-selling game for Nintendo systems for the month and the year. Despite the fact that there were a lot of significant games published in 2021, according to the NPD organization, Call of Duty accounted for the top two selling slots of the year, with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War taking second place. Vanguard, in particular, has performed worse than Black Ops Cold War in terms of overall sales, owing to technical difficulties that have plagued the World War 2 shooter since its release. Not to mention, the Black Ops franchise is one of the series’ most popular sub-franchises.
