What is Boxing Day?
Matches that are played or start on December 26 are referred to as “Boxing Day” matches. It is the opening game of the worldwide holiday season, which starts with Christmas and ends with New Year’s celebrations.
Boxing Day was first declared a holiday in the west in 1871 and is now observed as a day on which employers offer gifts to their employees. This was done to honour the employees that worked during the holidays.
Even today, the majority of charitable endeavours and international holiday shopping begin on December 26. The phrase is currently more frequently connected to sports alone.
Boxing Day in Sports
The first Boxing Day game in England took place in 1888 between Bolton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion. To date, West Brom has played 105 games on December 26—more than any other English football team.
With nine goals each, Robbie Fowler and Harry Kane share the record for most goals scored on Boxing Day – a record Kane could break in the time to come.
