Boxing: Canelo Alvarez wants to fight Dmitrii Bivol at 175lbs
After Alvarez lost to Bivol last year, fans are highly anticipating him to take on the Russian fighter once again. And now Promoter Eddie Hearn and Bivol’s manager Vadim Kornilov have discussed the possibility of the pair meeting again at super middleweight, where Bivol would have the opportunity to become undisputed champion. However, Alvarez worries his naysayers would not give him full credit for defeating Bivol at the lower weight.
When asked if dropping down in weight would give him an advantage in a rematch, Canelo replied, “Yes, but everyone will start f***ing talking. Everyone is going to f***ing start saying, ‘Oh, but he brought him down [in weight]. That’s why [Bivol] lost.’ But they didn’t say anything when I went up [in weight]. Canelo makes a fair point. After he moved up to light heavyweight in 2019 and knocked out Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO title, many praised Canelo for once again overcoming the odds to beat a bigger opponent. However, if Bivol came down to super middleweight for a rematch, skeptics would likely say Canelo only won because he forced the bigger Bivol to drain himself to make weight.
