Barcelona Referee Scandal: Things are now slowly getting unfolded with the Barcelona Negreira Scandal. The Catalan club was earlier accused of corruption as they paid money to referees in order to get decisions in their favour. The latest report suggests that former Barcelona directors have claimed to pay £7.4 million to Negreira’s two companies. However, the payment was made as an act of ‘self-defence’ and to protect themselves from bias. In the tax inspection, the former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee Negreira also had something similar to say. He also revealed that the money was transferred to have “neutral” referees in their games. The directors also informed that the ties with Negreira were not cut because he threatened to take revenge on the club by revealing the relationship. Negreira’s two companies, DASNIL, and NILSAT received payment of £7.4 million from Barcelona.

In the next step of the investigation, former managers of the club, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde will be interviewed. Current President Joan Laporta will also be interviewed further. Laporta was seen in tears addressing to all Barcelona players and said, “he was desperate to take on the shameless individuals staining the club’s badge.”
The scandal has created new problems for Barcelona as the club was already suffering financially due to the pandemic. Moreover, the club’s management was about to raise 1.5bn euros to rebuild Camp Nou.
Barcelona have been charged with corruption by Spanish prosecutors over payments made to the former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee.

The allegations will not only harm Barcelona’s integrity but the club might also face some sanctions if found true. They might lose some of their sponsors and also the UCL spot. Article 4 of UEFA prevents clubs from interfering illegally in the results of matches, which Barcelona will breach if found true.
However, everything now depends on Spanish Football Federation and the investigation.
