Even though Gavi is a full Spain international, he is still listed as an academy player. The contract signed by Gavi in September was thought to be in line with La Liga’s guidelines for a first-team player. When Barcelona sent over the documents for the same, they were highly confident that Gavi would be registered as a first-team player. Apparently, Barca’s attempt to sign the La Masia wunderkind was denied.

Currently, due to LaLiga’s salary cap, Barça cannot register a new contract on their wage bill. With the departures of Gerard Pique and Memphis Depay, the Spanish club thought they had enough breathing room to register new signings, but it doesn’t look likely. As of now, Barça has a negative balance, mainly due to being eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage.

The solution for Barca seems to be to reduce the wage bill or gain new money from sponsorships. They managed to secure signings last summer due to the ‘levers’ that they pulled.
