Chasing 157, Bangladesh openers Litton Das and Rony Taukdar got the team off to a great start. They scored at more than 10 runs per over in the first three overs of the powerplay. Desperate to contain the flow of runs. Jos Buttler called upon Adil Rashid in the fourth over and he broke the opening stand by dismissing Talukdar with a flighted googly that deceived the batsman and crashed the stumps.
Litton Das too was dismissed in the next over. However, Najmul Hossain Shanto and debutant Towhid Hridoy carried on the momentum helping the hosts cruise in the chase. The highlight of Shanto’s innings was his four successive boundaries off Mark Wood soon after the powerplay as England bowlers were left searching for a wicket.
Bot the players shared a 65-run stand for the third wicket. Shanto reached his fifty off 27 deliveries. The partnership was broken however by Moeen Ali as he dismissed Hridoy in the 12th over. Mark Wood too got his revenge against Shanto by castling his middle-stump as the England bowlers tried hard to make comeback.
The required run rate was reduced to run-a-ball and skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Afif Hossain ensured no further hiccups. The duo shared a unbroken 46-run stand off 34 balls and took their team home with 12 balls remaining.
Earlier, Jos Buttler and Phil Salt got England to a great start. They shared 80-run opening stand and were threatening the Bangladesh bowlers. The partnership was broken by Nasum Ahmed as he dismissed Salt for 38 off 35 balls. The breakthrough proved to be the turning point as from then on the bowlers struck in regular intervals.
Apart from Buttler who managed to score 67 off 42 balls, none off the other batters got off to a good start as the Bangladeshi bowlers made a good comeback in the second-half of the innings to restrict the visitors to 156.
