Indonesia Masters: Play stopped abruptly as venue covered with fire & smoke, no player harmed

Indonesia Masters: When the incident occurred, there was no Indian player present at the venue, since all of them had already lost their matches in previous rounds.

The action at Indonesia Masters on Saturday stopped abruptly after a fire broke out at the venue, during the semifinal encounters. As per a few media reports, the first match of the day, between China’s Zhang Shu Xian-Zheng Yu of China and Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajongjai of Thailand was stopped midway due to the incident. Fortunately, the players soon left the court unharmed.

“Due to unforeseen circumstances, play has been temporarily stopped at the Istora Senayan. Play at the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2024 will resume as soon as the matter is resolved,” BWF tweeted from their official handle.

While so far no official reason has been given for the reason for the fire, as can be seen in the video, it could be a result of a wire in one of the lights catching fire.

Earlier, all the Indian players had crashed out of the tournament. On Friday, Kiran George lost his quarters match to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
