After dominating the majority of men’s singles events he has played in the past four years, Axelsen was expected to be one of the top players on the ATP Super 750 tour. The world number one began his new season at the Malaysian Open earlier this month.
He looked his usual self last week in Kuala Lumpur before losing in the semi-finals to China’s Shi Yi Qui after three hard-fought sets.
Axelsen took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce that he had decided to withdraw from the Indian Open due to health concerns.
“After my match on Saturday, I’ve been laying in bed ill and after talking with the medical team present here in Malaysia, I’ve been advised to get additional checkup,” wrote Axelsen.
“That means that I unfortunately won’t be able to travel and be present at India Open this year, which is rather disappointing as it has been a tournament where I’ve loved to play in front of the Indian badminton fans,” he added.
As a result of Axelsen’s withdrawal, Wang Tzu Wei of China will receive a walkover in the first round.
