Badminton World Tour Finals Highlights – World No.1 Viktor Axelsen ended the year by winning the BWF World Tour Championship title. The Danish defeated Indonesia’ Anthony Ginting in straight games in the final to claim his eighth title of the year. Earlier, World No.1 Akane Yamaguchi won the end of the year title as she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying in straight games in the final on Sunday, 11th December 2022. Men’s Singles
After struggling in the last two matches, Axelsen looked at his best in the summit clash. Right from the start, he enjoyed upper hand in the contest. He entered the interval with a five-point lead in the first game. After the break, he continued his good show and soon went seven point ahead of his opponent. Ginting, who was unbeaten in the tournament until this contest looked a pale shadow of himself and he didn’t even come close to giving a challenge to the World No.1. Axelsen soon closed out the first game 21-13.
The second game began with Axelsen taking five straight points. He picked up points with utmost ease as he stromed into the interval with the scores at 11-3. The one-sided contest continued afterwards and Axelsen sealed the second game 21-14 after a net-error from Ginting.
“It feels absolutely amazing,” Axelsen said post-match, after dancing across the court and thanking his wife and two young daughters in the crowd. “I couldn’t have wished for a better ending (to the year).” He attributed his solid recovery after two gruelling matches before the final to good rest and eating well. A disappointed Ginting said he was looking forward to a big 2023 and hoped to grow in confidence. “I cannot get any easy points from him,” Ginting said.

Women’s Singles
Both the players started attacking right from the word go in the first game, Tai Tzu Ying managed to pip her opponent by taking a slender 5-3 lead but Yamaguchi closed out the deficit soon. Soon the Japanese managed to take three successive points and entered the interval with a 11-9 lead. She maintained her lead after the break and clinched the first game 21-18.
Like the first game, Taiz Tzu started the second game with a slender lead. But Yamaguchi soon levelled the scores and clawed her way back into the contest as from 7-7, she took four points on the trot, entering the interval after a brilliant cross-court smash. Tai Tzu Ying put on a good fight as she tried hard to reduce the deficit. She managed to level the scores 13-13 but the Japanese didn’t allow Tai to take the lead as she runs away with four successive points and lead 18-14. She had two match point opportunities but committed two back-to-back errors that allowed Tai Tzi Ying to level the scores. Yamaguchi won the next point to have another match-point oporunity. This time a net-error from Tai Tzu Ying, helped her win the match.
Men’s Doubles
In the Men’s Doubles, China’s Liu Yuchen and Ou Zuanyi defeated Indonesia’s experienced Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. The Indonesian pair started the contest with a 4-1 lead but the Chinse didn’t let the lead to swell as they started tehir fightback. The Indonesians managed to enter the interval with a 11-8 lead. After the break, the Chinese continued their fight and managed to grab the lead. They went on to win the first game 21-17.
In the second game, they continued their dominance by entering the interval with a 11-6 advantage. They were looking set for a straight game victory as they were leading 19-17. However the Indonesian pair brought their experience to the fore as they clinched four crucial points to take the match into the decider.
In the decider, the Indonesian pair continue their good run as they start with a 5-1 lead. However the Chinese pair fought back and enjoyed a three-point lead going into the interval. From then on, they maintained the lead as they closed out the set 21-12 to win the title.
Women’s Doubles
Thailand’s Aimsaard sisters disappointed Thailand fans as they suffered a 21-13, 21-14 against China’s Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan pair. The Chinese duo were too good against the Thai pair as they clinched the Women’s Doubles title.
Mixed Doubles
In the Mixed Doubles, China’s Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong defeated Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapisree Taerattanachai 21-19, 18-21, 21-13 in the fibals to clinch the title.
