He is now planning to sue Australia’s Federal government for ASD 6 million (Rs 32 crores) which includes ASD 4 million prize money for winning the trophy. The development comes as he faces Rs 42 crore sponsorship damages after action by Australia.
A source close to his agent Edoardo Artladi said: “It’s well known that Novak and his family feel he was poorly treated in the quarantine hotel in Melbourne.
“His mother revealed how it was full of fleas and maggots. He was kept a virtual prisoner,” The Sun quoted him as saying.
Lawyer Toma Fila added: “He was subjected to humiliating treatment. He should sue.”
He returned to Serbia with a warm welcome by fans at return with posters that read: “You are our champion” with selfies to boost the morale and spirits of the 9-time Australian Open champion.
However, French Open & US Open are unlikely to allow him, putting uncertainty over his 21st Grand Slam. He is currently level with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer with 20 Grand Slams. Nadal has an opportunity to go past the duo at the Australian Open.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic could be banned from locker rooms around the world if he chooses to stay unvaccinated. The rules mean non-vaccinated players can only enter a tournament to use the actual courts but they won’t be allowed to use any tournament facilities. The development comes a day after twice Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka backed the vaccine mandate.
