Adam Zampa has returned a COVID-19 positive test before the SriLanka clash. The 30-year-old is only displaying minor symptoms and could very well feature in Perth. Zampa did not train with his side and was dropped for the game. Ashton Agar came on as the replacement for the leg spinner.

“Adam Zampa is OUT with illness, replaced by Ashton Agar,” skipper Aaron Finch said after the Toss.

Earlier, players testing positive had to undergo a mandatory quarantine and return a number of negative COVID-19 results to be brought back into the mix. However, the Australian government scrapped mandatory isolation requirements earlier this month and the rules are relaxed unlike the previous edition in the UAE.

Ireland’s George Dockrell played against Sri Lanka on Sunday in Hobart despite the team identifying him as “potentially positive”. In a statement by Cricket Ireland, Dockrell’s symptoms were revealed to be very mild, and the medical staff in the team managed his movements and interactions in line with tournament and current government protocols.

Cricket Ireland had also notified the ICC chief medical officer, the opposition team and stadium staff. Dockrell batted at No.6 and made a 16-ball 14 before being bowled by Maheesh Theekshana. Earlier in the year, Australian all-rounder Tahlia McGrath played in the Commonwealth games Gold medal match against India despite a COVID-19 test.

While the threat of COVID-19 is not as severe as it was last year,  the Australian Government and Cricket Australia will both be monitoring the issue as it develops. With two positive cases in three days, the alarm bells have not hit yet, but a close eye on players’ health will be kept. Australia, the hosts, were in line to host the 2020 edition but it was postponed to 2022 due to COVID-19.
