After an early blow in the form of Marcus Harris, David Warner and Labuschagne resurrected the innings. Warner who had earlier slammed 94 runs in the previous Test scored 95 runs while Labuschagne brought up his fifty from 156 deliveries full of patience. He was dropped thrice by England en route to his unbeaten 95 runs knock.

AUS vs ENG Day 1 Stumps: David Warner & Marnus Labuschagne put Australia in command

In the second session, Australia added 84 runs as Warner and Labuschagne fought their way back after England had picked an early wicket in the opening essay. It was a wicketless session as Warner and Labuschagne held the ground to help Australia reach 129-1 at Tea.

Resuming the final session at 129/1, Warner and Labuschagne resumed from where they left off and kept on putting pressure on England. The duo put on 172 runs for the second wicket.

Warner missed out on a century once against as he was dismissed by Ben Stokes in the 65th over. The left-handed batter scored 95 from 167 balls with the help of 11 fours.

Labuschagne along with skipper Steve Smith ensured that Australia does not lose any more wickets before stumps. It is important to note that Labuschagne was dropped by Jos Buttler when the right-hander was on 95. Earlier, Jos Buttler took a brilliant catch to send Marcus Harris packing cheaply.

Australia opt to bat against England- Stand-in captain Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bat in the pink-ball Adelaide Test. Australia captain Pat Cummins is ruled out for the match as a last-minute blow after being identified as COVID case contact. Meanwhile, James Anderson & Stuart Broad returns to the England Playing XI while spinner Jack Leach has been axed.

Joe Root: We would have batted first as well. It’s unfortunate circumstances. We fully respect the rest of the squad. We need to play well. Stuart to get that special landmark in an Ashes Test, you don’t need more motivation. Jack Leach misses out. Had to make a brave call and back the seamers to do the job. We need to recognize the phases to do well with the bat and ball.

Steve Smith: We are going to have a bat. I think you can control the game if you bat first. Huge honour (to lead Australia again). Feel for Patty for missing this game. Hopefully we can have a good week. He just wished me good luck and said it’s your team go well. Excited for Jhye and Michael Neser.

Vice-captain Steve Smith will take charge for the first time since March 2018 after the sandpaper scandal in Cape Town. Following the incident, he was banned from participating in any international cricket for a year.

Australia now has three different captains in its last three Tests. Even if Cummins tests negative 50 times, Cummins won’t be allowed to train for a week. Leaves him three days of bowling before Boxing Day.

England (Playing XI): Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan, Joe Root(c), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler(w), Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Australia XI: Marcus Harris, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (c), Travis Head (vc), Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Michael Neser, Mitch Starc, Nathan Lyon, Jhye Richardson

Michael Neser comes into the playing XI to make his Test debut and Travis Head will be vice-captain. The development leaves Australia without arguably their best two fast bowlers after Josh Hazlewood’s injury.

Why Pat Cummins ruled out- Cummins was dining in a restaurant last night and did not breach any biosecurity protocols. He isolated as soon as he became aware of the situation and has since had a PCR test, which produced a negative result. SA Health has confirmed that Cummins is a close contact and will be required to isolate for seven days. As a consequence, Cummins is unavailable to play in the second Test.

If Cummins tests COVID positive, he must isolate for 10 days as per Victoria guidelines.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon were dining at the same restaurant as Cummins but at a separate table outdoors. SA Health has deemed them casual contacts and they are free to play.

Michael Neser will become Australia’s 462nd men’s Test cricketer. He had been part of the Australian squad for 17 Tests without ever donning the baggy green.

“Gutted to miss this Test but really excited to see Neser finally get his chance in the baggy green. He has done the hard yards and is a seriously skilful player. Super frustrating but COVID has thrown us all some curve balls over the last couple of years. Will be cheering along!” Cummins wrote on Twitter.

Australian captain Pat Cummins has been deemed a close contact of a person who received a positive Covid-19 test last night and is unavailable to play in the second Ashes Test,” Cricket Australia wrote on Twitter.

“We anticipate that he will be available to play in the third Test at the MCG in Melbourne,” it added.

Joe Root & Company ready to fightback: Joe Root & Co will undergo a pink-ball Test in the upcoming contest against Australia. England are already under pressure as Australia have never lost a pink-ball Test in all 8 matches. The visitors will eye to bounce back strongly after losing the opening contest by 9 wickets.

The inclusion of the experience of James Anderson and Stuart Broad would give a boost to the visitors against Josh Hazlewood & Pat Cummins less Australia. Meanwhile, David Warner’s availability comes as a huge boost for the hosts.

Ashes 2021-22: James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Jack Leach included in England’s 12-man squad for pink-ball Test

TEAM NEWS

England (from)

England Men’s Squad for second Ashes Test: Joe Root (c), Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Haseeb Hameed, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.

Durham seamer Mark Wood has been rested. The final XI will be confirmed at the toss.

England need to improve a number of areas as the Brisbane Test exposed their batting and fielding frailties, exacerbated by rain-hit preparations and lack of match practice. It wasn’t helped by poor decision-making — notably captain Joe Root choosing to bat after winning the toss on a juicy Gabba pitch and the widely criticised omission of pace veterans Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad.

Root knows his team must find a way to improve, and fast, to stand a chance at a ground where Australia have hosted five of their eight Test wins under lights.

“We have got to be better in the field and with the bat,” he said, but added: “We’re game-hardened now, we’re in the series.”

Seamers Broad and Anderson are tipped to return given the extra movement found with a pink ball, something coach Chris Silverwood hinted at this week.

“Jimmy will be fit and ready to go for the second Test, as will Stuart,” he told British media.

“We have talent and we still have two of the best (bowlers) up our sleeve as well.”

That would likely mean one of Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood or Chris Woakes missing out, and England must also decide what to do with spinner Jack Leach, who was hammered for 1-102 off 13 overs at the Gabba.

While losing by nine wickets was bad enough, they were also fined all of their match fees and docked Test Championship points for a slow over rate.

There are also concerns over Ben Stokes, who failed to fire in his first competitive match in six months after a break to deal with a finger injury and mental health issues.

Root insisted England’s star all-rounder would bounce back and warned Australia: “You write Ben Stokes off at your own peril.”

Silverwood said the team was looking ahead, rather than dwelling on defeat.

“Obviously they were hurting, but there is belief they can win this series,” he said, despite England losing three of the four day-night Tests they have played so far.

“We have the players here that can match the Australians. The confidence is there that we can compete with Australia, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.”

Ashes 2021 LIVE: Trevor Bayliss says England can take inspiration from India after going 0-1 down in the series

Australia have their own headaches, with Josh Hazlewood ruled out with a side strain. It is a big blow with the fast bowler boasting a pink-ball record of 32 wickets at just 19.90.
He was the major destroyer in Adelaide a year ago, taking an incredible 5-8 when India were rolled for just 36 in their second innings.

Australian captain Pat Cummins said after Brisbane that Hazlewood’s injury was “nothing too serious”, but selectors opted not to risk him with the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne coming hot on the heels of Adelaide.

Jhye Richardson is the frontrunner to add to his two Tests and spearhead the attack alongside Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, although Michael Neser is also an option.

Ashes 2021-22: Wounded England face pink-ball challenge in second Ashes Test

The experienced Usman Khawaja is a likely replacement to open alongside Marcus Harris should Australia choose to rest Warner.

Despite this, Cummins is confident of his team taking a 2-0 Ashes lead given Australia’s unblemished pink-ball record at Adelaide and the thumping they handed England last week.

“We’re going to Adelaide, a place we love playing and the pink ball’s a little bit different… there’s a few more unknowns,” he said.

“But it’s a format we really enjoy and Adelaide Oval’s a great place to play cricket.”
