The 23-time Grand Slam winner arrived in Turin on Tuesday night. He was seen receiving a rousing welcome as fans lined up outside his hotel. The Spaniard greeted fans and journalists and was seen signing autographs before he went inside his hotel. Nadal has arrived much earlier than expected following his second round defeat at the Paris Masters last week.

The Spaniard will be the highest-ranked player at the season-ending championship following the withdrawal of World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, who suffered an abdominal injury at the Paris Masters and eventually decided to end his season. With 1500 ranking points up for grabs at the ATP Finals, Nadal has a chance to finish the year as the World No.2 if he wins the title at Turin. The Spaniard is just 1000 points behind Alcaraz at the moment.

Nadal did not qualify for the ATP Finals in 2021 and will be making his return to the tournament. He has qualified for the event for 16 straight years from 2005-20, and has competed 10 times at the year-end event. However Nadal is yet to lift a title in the event. His best show in the tournament so far in his career has been the runner-up finishes at 2010 and 2013.

The 22-time Grad Slam champion had a terrific season this year in which he won the Australian Open title and the French Open title. However at Wimbledon, he suffered a groin injury and had to pull out of the semifinal contest against Nick Kyrgios. He made his return at Cincinnati ahead of the US Open but wasn’t at his best as he made the fourth round exit from the last Grand Slam event of the year after losing against Frances Tiafoe. He then bowed out from the second round of the Paris Masters by losing against Tommy Paul and now hopes to end the year on a high.
