Heading into Round 4, Rafael Nadal was in pole position to become World No.1 following Daniil Medvedev’s defeat to Nick Kyrgios. The Spanish veteran had almost a 1000-point lead over his challenger Carlos Alcaraz but a defeat to Frances Tiafoe has left him vulnerable. Alcaraz was on the same side of Nadal’s draw and his exit has given him safe passage into the latter sounds.
Alcaraz, should he reach the final, will become the World No.1. Should he do so, he will become the youngest World No. 1 in the history of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings. If Alcaraz and Ruud play in the US Open final, the winner will leave New York as a first-time World No. 1.

Ruud can take over the World No.1 crown should he manage a better finish than his 19-year-old competitor. An Alcaraz vs Ruud final would see the winner become the World No.1 at the end of Flushing Meadows. If Ruud climbs to the pinnacle, he will become the first Norwegian to do so.
Ruud, who has already advanced to the quarter-finals, is up three spots to No. 4 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. Alcaraz is currently No. 5 in the live standings.
Entering the tournament, Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas also had an opportunity to leave the season’s final major as World No. 1. It was not the first thing on Medvedev’s mind after his loss, but the 26-year-old is disappointed that he will relinquish the top spot.
