Zverev held on to his breakpoints while his competitor Hurkacz failed to create one. He overall won 61 game points as compared to the Polish player.

“Today was a tough match mentally because I needed to win, so I was 100 per cent focused,” Zverev said as quoted by ATP Tour.

“It was very up and down, and I am happy to be through and win in straight sets. You can always improve. The margins are always very small between the top players, but to win you have to do the details right. I hope I can do that on Saturday,” he added.

He will now meet World No.1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the ATP Tour. It will be another big semifinal this year between them, after the Olympics and US Open. While Zverev got the better of Djokovic in Olympics, the latter took the revenge in US Open semifinals, setting up a perfect clash for the year-ender semifinals title.

“I have played Novak in every single big hard-court tournament this year. We are making a habit of playing in the later rounds at big tournaments. It is going to be an entertaining one I think,” Zverev added.

This is only the third time that Zverev has advanced to the last four at the season finale. The World No. 3 is making his fifth appearance at ATP Finals. Zverev has now won 30 of his past 34 matches. The 24-year-old had fallen short to Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals in 2019. He entered the tournament on the back of four ATP titles and Olympics Gold.
