In an action-packed day, the Indian contingent kicked off their campaign at Oregon for the World Athletics Championships 2022. Priyanka Goswami finished 34th in the Women’s 20km race walk final. Ranked 63rd in the world, Goswami faced a stern test and and was taken to her limits as she finished with a time of 01:39:42.
Like Priyanka, Sandeep Kumar also faced a battle against the odds in the Men’s 20km race walk final. The two-time Olympian finished 40th in the men’s category of the 20km Walk Race final and recorded time of (01:31:58).
Meanwhile, Avinash Sable finished third in heat 3 of the Men’s 3000m Steeple chase. Sable is one of India’s biggest medal hopes and the national record holder will aim to seal a podium. Sable has the second-best season best timing in his heat and will eye a similar showing when he gets to his mark.

Murali Sreeshankar was the top draw for India when the Kerala-born long jumper took the field and secured qualification for the final of Long Jump. While there was disappointment for Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya. Sreeshankar shares the joint second spot among season leaders with Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece and will be a dark horse in the final. It was end of the journey for Aldrin and Yahiya having done well to qualify.
It was disappointment for Olympian Tajinderpal Singh Toor in the men’s Shot Put. Toor ranked 41st in the world pulled out of the event and thus missed out on qualification.
