Arsenal moved four points clear of fifth-placed Manchester United after beating Aston Villa thanks to Bukayo Saka’s first-half winner.
Emi Martínez, coming up against his old club, pulled off a remarkable save to deny Ezri Konsa turning the ball into his own net from Saka’s cross in the first real goalmouth action of the game 10 minutes in.
But Martínez wasn’t able to deny Saka 20 minutes later after the hosts failed to clear a free-kick leading to the ball falling into the path of the winger who hit a left-footed half-volley into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

Villa hustled and harried as they searched for a way back into the game in the second half and John McGinn flashed a shot just wide of the far post from outside of the area. Ollie Watkins then saw his close-range effort come back off the post before substitute Danny Ings’ header landed on the roof of the net in the dying minutes.
The Gunners held out and open up a real gap on the chasing pack in the race for the top four while Steven Gerrard’s side remain in ninth. Both teams return to Premier League action after the international break. Villa travel to face Wolves on April 2, while Arsenal are also on the road against Crystal Palace on April 4.
