Astana Open LIVE: Daniil Medvedev, who lost his World No.1 ranking after the US Open made a great start to his Astana Open campaign as he defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas in straight sets in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday. The 26-year-old former World No.1 needed just 79 minutes to defeat his opponent in the first round and made a stunning debut at the ATP 500 event in Kazhakstan. The Russian asserted his dominance in the contest right from the start as he broke Ramos Vinolas in his very first service game. He went on to break Vinolas one more time to take the first set 6-4.
In the second set, it became a one way traffic as Vinolas could manage to just hold his serve once. Despite playing lng rallies, Medvedev stayed on top as he used a number of drop shots to successfully change the rhythm of points. That helped him break the serve thrice to win the opening round contest. He will now meet either Sofia champion Marc-Andrea Huesler or Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round.
The 2020 Nitto ATP Finals champion is also next in line to qualify for the season finale, currently fifth in the ATP Live Race To Turin. Medvedev is trying to earn his place in the year-end championships for the fourth consecutive year.
