India returned to winning ways on Wednesday as they trashed neighbours Bangladesh 9-0 to go on top of the standings. Striker Dilpreet Singh struck a hat-trick, while Jarmanpreet Singh scored twice from penalty corners to help the defending champions to a convincing win. The tournament marks a new beginning for Team India, as a host of new players have been called up to the squad.
The Asian Champions Trophy marks India’s first tournament since their historic Tokyo Olympics campaign, where they clinched the bronze, a first medal since in 41 years. The Manpreet Singh-led India had earlier drawn 2-2 against Korea in their tournament opener on Tuesday. After the disappointing result, India came out with a purpose and will be aiming to continue in the same vein against Pakistan.

India’s arch-rivals began their campaign with a draw, as they were held up by Japan on Tuesday. Pakistan will be happy with their defensive effort, but their lack of goals will concern them, especially against India who will leave no opportunity to hit back at their rivals.

The two teams last contested in the Asian Champions Trophy back in 2018, with India winning 3-1 on that occasion. In fact, India have not lost to the Men in Green since 2014, winning 10 and drawing two games in that period. Incidentally, India and Pakistan were declared joint winners by virtue of forfeiture of the final due to persistent rain back in 2018.
