After Japan defeated Pakistan earlier in the day, India needed to beat Indonesia and better Pakistan’s goal difference to make it to the Super 4s. The Men in Blue needed to win by a margin of 15 goals to seal their progress into the knockouts. However, India were staring at an exit despite leading 6-0 at Half-time.

However, Dipsan Tirkey and Abharan Sudev stepped up in the second half to help India bounce back, scoring four in the third quarter to swell India’s lead to 10-0. The Men in Blue then scored twice in quick succession to begin the fourth quarter to put them on the verge of qualification.

Indonesia however were beginning to be a thorn in the flesh and the ejection of Nilan Sanjeep worsened the matters, with India still needing to score two heading into the final five minutes of the game. Fortunately for India, their stars delivered from a series of penalty corners to go 16-0 ahead, and seal the game and a place in the Super 4s. The win will be further special as it knocks out Pakistan as India qualified at their expense.
Asia Cup Men’s Hockey 2022 Format: In the preliminary round, four teams in each pool will play each other once, then the top two teams progress to Super 4s. In Super 4s, four teams will play each other once. The top teams will then play the final. The top three teams will qualify for the Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup 2023 in India.
Dipsan Tirkey was the star with 4 goals, Sudev scored a hat-trick, while Selvam, Pawan and the veteran SV Sunil scored a brace in what was a magnificent a triumph.
