Ashes 2021-22 LIVE: James Anderson comes up with a befitting reply at Joe Root’s dig at England bowlers

“It doesn’t matter what bowlers you play if you’re getting bowled out for 140,” Stuart Broad told Code Sport.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan reiterated Broad’s stance, saying: “It‘s absolutely right. You can win Test matches being blown away for 147, 185, 68 … you just can’t possibly complete,” he told cricket.com.au

“I don‘t mind that because it’s the truth. If he came out and bottled over what’s been happening, the truth is England haven’t batted well enough, they haven’t bowled well enough, they haven’t caught well enough, they haven’t selected well enough, everything’s been wrong so far on the tour so there’s no point hiding behind the fact you can’t compete unless you score runs,” Vaughan added.

The focus now shifts to England opening pair Haseeb Hameed & Zak Crawley (who survived a major scare after Mitchell Starc’s no-ball on the dying moments of Day 2).

England also needs the senior cricketers Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and skipper Root to play big innings as the visitors are still in search of a score par 300+.

Meanwhile, Shane Warne felt no other players had the fire like Broad did to be successful in Test cricket.

“He has got that competitiveness. He really wants to do well and everyone does, but he really has that extra fire. He had that come on, bring it on mentality. He had the Daniel son karate headband,” he said.
