Silverwood was already due to miss the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney having entered quarantine when one of his family was caught up in the initial coronavirus outbreak in the touring camp. The head coach has been replaced by Assistant coach Graham Thorpe, who will now lead the English team.

“England men’s head coach Chris Silverwood has tested positive for Covid-19,” a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board read as reported by SkySports.

“Silverwood has been isolating in Melbourne since December 30 following a positive test from one of his family members. He will remain in isolation until January 8. Silverwood is asymptomatic and is fully vaccinated,” the statement read further.

England training session cancelled: England’s preparations for the fourth Ashes Test against Australia took another hit on Sunday after one of its net bowlers tested positive for COVD-19, leading to the cancellation of its training session with other net bowlers deemed as close contacts.

This led to England practising without the net bowlers & players throwing & bowling at each other. Not only this but new addition to support staff, former ODI captain Adam Hollioake also will be unavailable as he is deemed a close contact of a positive case.

AUS ENG Sydney Test – The visiting England team has now lost 5 support staff members including the head-coach to Covid related issues.

Who will coach England team?

  • Spin coach Jeetan Patel – Covid Positive
  • Fast bowling coach Jon Lewis – Covid Positive
  • Strength and Conditioning coach Darren Veness – Covid Positive
  • Head Coach Chris Silverwood – In Isolation after Covid positive Test
  • Adam Hollioake – Replacement Coach also deemed to be close contact to positive case.

All five will miss the fourth Test in Sydney after being left behind in Melbourne as a result of an outbreak in the camp, and Graham Thorpe will lead the side.

Hollioake lives on the Gold Coast and had initially been cleared to work with the team outdoors as he was a late arrival from a different state.

Such is the situation that Captain Joe Root was captured taking over some of the coaching duties on Sunday.

Australia also reeling under Travis Head’s positive case: For home team Australia, Travis Head is already out of 4th test match of the series after testing positive.

Usman Khawaja is the leading contender to replace Head. Australia has also named Josh Inglis and Mitch Marsh to the squad for Sydney.

It will be Khawaja’s 1st test after 2019 Ashes.

“Potentially I’ll have one game for Australia here,” the 35-year-old told reporters.

“But I know it’s not going to be the be all, end all. Even if that doesn’t happen, I know there’s still a lot of cricket to come up”

Covid-19 woes for Sydney test doesnt end with this. Even Match Referee David Boon is out of the test after testing positive.

Ashes 2021-22 LIVE Updates – AUS ENG Sydney Test – Weather Forecast LIVE

Rain Forecast for Sydney: The forecast for Sydney does not look promising at this stage, with wet weather forecast for at least the first four days of the Test. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts between two and six millimetres of rain on Wednesday and Thursday, with a 70 to 80 per cent chance of rain on both days.

“If we get the weather it will naturally become a turner but if we don’t get the weather it will just hold together and won’t do much,” curator Adam Lewis told the Herald and The Age.

“I’m just praying for good weather when the game starts”
