Arsenal took the game to Everton from the first whistle, driving towards their penalty area and not allowing them to play out for first 15 minutes.

Jesus was presented with a golden opportunity to give the Gunners the lead when Mason Holgate passed to ball straight to the Brazilian in the penalty area but Jordan Pickford was on hand, keeping the ball out with an outstanding save.

Granit Xhaka would hit the post with a header before Everton were denied a penalty appeal as Dele Alli went down after a collision with Matt Turner.

The first goal came just after the half-hour mark when the Everton defence – and Pickford – got caught under Cédric Soares’ corner. The ball fell at the feet of Jesus who controlled and fired home into an empty net – his third goal in two games.

Turning provider, Jesus was found by Gabriel in a pocket of space. The 25-year-old turned and drove at the Everton defence before sliding in Bukayo Saka to double the lead.

Both teams made plenty of changes at half-time leading to a disjointed, and more even second period but neither team could find a goal with tempers flaring at the end of the encounter. Notably, William Saliba played 70 minutes for Arsenal as James Tarkowski made his debut for Everton.
