But it was his father who gave him the self-belief. Sachin had a special conversation the night before he scored his century for Goa against Rajasthan. With that knock, Arjun emulated his father 34 years after Sachin scored a century on debut. At a function on Thursday, Sachin narrated the beautiful conversation between the father and son.
“It hasn’t been an easy ride for him (Arjun), it’s been a tough journey for him. Someone who can relate to him is possibly Rohan Gavaskar. I did tell him to go for 100. He was batting on 4 not out. He was sent as a night watchman. He asked, ‘what do you think would be a good total?’ They were 210/5 down. I said, ‘at least 375 is what you need to get to’. And he said, ‘are you sure?’ I replied, ‘yeah. You need to go out and get a hundred. Do you believe you can go out and get a 100?’” Sachin Tendulkar said at Infosys at 40 function.

Struggling for a spot in the star-studded Mumbai state team, Arjun decided to follow Rohan Gavaskar’s footsteps. He left Mumbai to play for Goa. But with 8 wickets in 7 matches, he had a lukewarm start for Goa in Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, with his century, he has managed to bring the spotlight back on him from his father for the time being.
“Arjun has not led a normal childhood. Being a son of a cricketer who’s been around for quite some time, it’s not so easy. That’s the only reason, when I retired and I was felicitated by the media in Mumbai, my message to them was to allow Arjun to fall in love with cricket, give him that opportunity,” Sachin narrated to Gaurav Kapoor during an Infosys function.

Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh also played a big role in his transformation. After leaving Mumbai, Arjun hit rock-bottom. But Yograj gave him special batting session and nurtured him in the off-season.
“In the first week of September, I got a call from Yuvi (Yuvraj), saying, ‘Dad, Arjun will be in Chandigarh for two weeks and Sachin has requested if you have time to train him’. How could I have said no to Sachin, he is like my elder son. But I had one condition. I told Yuvi, ‘You know my way of training and I don’t want anyone to intervene’,” Yograj told The Indian Express from Sheffield.
“I had told him that he must forget he is Sachin Tendulkar’s son for the next 15 days. I feel he was mollycoddled by coaches because he is Tendulkar’s son. I told him that he needs to get out of his father’s shadow,” Yograj says.
But Sachin now breathes a sigh of relief. Like many called Ramesh Tendulkar, father of Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian No 10 wants people to call him father of Arjun Tendulkar.
“I remember hearing my father tell someone – this was just when I had started playing for India – someone referred to him as ‘Sachin’s father’. He heard that, and then my father’s friend asked him ‘how do you feel?’ He said, ‘it’s the proudest moment of my life’. Fathers want their children to be recognized by what their child has done,” Sachin said.
