Former India superstar Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first to send his wishes across after Argentina were crowned champions on Sunday. Lionel Messi scored a brace and then converted his penalty as La Albiceleste ended their 36-year wait for the World Cup title. It is Messi’s first ever World Cup, coming in potentially his final campaign at the biggest stage.

Messi’s success mirrored that of Sachin Tendulkar, who won the World Cup in his final attempt in 2011. Incidentally, both Sachin and Messi had lost the World Cup final eight years before their eventual victories. Sachin won the trophy after five unsuccessful attempts. Messi had four tries before winning the title in Qatar.
The duo played instrumental roles in their team’s run to the final, with a player-of-the-match performance in the semis. With the No.10 on his back, Sachin scored a glorious 85 to lead India to win over Pakistan in the semifinal. For Argentina, their little magician from Rosaria put in a fine performance to dump out Croatia in the final four.
