Backroom made up of cheerleaders: Vaughan questions Stokes & McCullum after 4-1 humbling in India

Throughout the series, England made outlandish claims like they'd chase 600 in the fourth inning or that they were the reason why Yashasvi Jaiswal was scoring quickly.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has bashed Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum for their happy-go-easy approach. After winning the first match of the India vs England Test series, the visitors lost four matches on the trot. These losses included a 434-run thrashing in Rajkot and an inning and 64-run defeat in Dharamshala.

Talking about their performance and criticizing their method. Talking about how they claim that they’ll chase 600 or claim that they are playing to have fun rather than playing for winning, Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph:

“In my view, after a humbling series defeat in India, I strongly believe that a dose of honesty is the most important thing for this England team right now. Every interview you hear the same stuff, about excitement, opportunity and fun, that everyone is having the time of their life. I worry that they are speaking a language that not all of them truly believe, which is dangerous.”

On Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett failing despite scoring mammoth centuries and the reluctance to challenge the player’s temperament and technique, he bashed the England coaching staff and skipper Ben Stokes. He wrote:

“I do worry it’s a backroom team made up of cheerleaders. Players need challenging and questioning at times.”
