WPL 2024: Chamari Athapaththu’s controversial DRS dismissal sparks outrage

Ellyse Perry and Smriti Mandhana heroics propelled Royal Challengers Bangalore to set a 199-run target

Georgia Wareham’s dismissal of UP Warriorz star Chamari Athapaththu ignited a DRS controversy. In the seventh over, the RCB star appealed for LBW against Chamari after the umpire initially ruled her not out. However, RCB decided to review the decision after a discussion.

Athapaththu played across the line and was struck on the pads. Ghosh, convinced that it was out, persuaded Mandhana to review the decision. Several key questions arose: Did the ball pitch in line, and did it turn to eventually hit the leg stump? There was a clear gap between the ball and the bat, so there were no issues on that front.

According to the ball tracking system, the ball pitched in line and would have hit the middle of the middle stump. Athapaththu couldn’t believe what she had witnessed, but she had to walk back to the pavilion. What puzzled the Warriorz was that the ball, after pitching on leg, moved in the opposite direction of a conventional leg spinner, hitting the middle stump.

The overturning of the decision, however, left the fans dissatisfied, who took to Twitter to express their feelings.
