National Games 2023: Nagaland ends 12-year medal drought, wins bronze in Pencak Silat Regu

Nagaland’s decade-long medal drought at the National Games has come to an end. The Women’s team from the state secured bronze in Pencak Silat Regu, a combative sport at the ongoing Games in Goa.

Nagaland’s Liike Kibami, Hinokali, and Avikali V Sheqi won the bronze medal in the sport. With that they ended the 12-year medal drought for the state in the Games.

Pencak Silat Regu is a sport reportedly originating from Indonesia. The Nagaland’s trio lost the semifinal and were awarded the bronze. Delhi emerged as the champion in the category, while the silver went to Haryana. Punjab is also another losing semifinalists.

It is Nagaland’s first medal at the National Games since the 2011. Back in the edition held in Ranchi, Jharkhand, the State won 2 bronze medals. After 2011, the National Games were held only twice in 2015 and 2022. Nagaland failed to win any medals in both the editions of the Games.

As of October 28, Maharashtra was leading the mdeal tally with 78 medals followed by Haryana with 33 medals and Services Sports Control Board- 21 medals. The 2023 edition of the National Games will conclude on November 9.
