McLaren had announced last week that Ricciardo wouldn’t feature on the opening two days of the Bahrain Pre-season Testing. But, McLaren revealed on Friday that he had tested positive for Covid 19. McLaren teams update read, “McLaren F1 Team confirms that after testing positive for Covid-19 during last week, Daniel has now returned a number of negative tests. He will therefore return to the paddock on Thursday ready to compete in this weekend’s Bahrain GP.”

The McLaren team were confident that Daniel Ricciardo would be fine as he had shown improvements in his condition. Meanwhile, they confirmed on Wednesday that the Honey Badger is now tested negative and is cleared to race.

Bahrain GP 2022 Live: The reserve drivers for McLaren
McLaren had announced last week that Oscar Piastri will join them as their reserve driver. Oscar was currently the reserve driver for Alpine. McLaren also cleared any doubts that it was not linked to Ricciardo’s participation in Bahrain.
Team McLaren had a similar agreement with Mercedes. Now, Mercedes will share their reserve drivers in the form of Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries. Nyck would be present at the Bahrain Grand Prix. However, Vandoorne will be racing at Sebring for the IMSA 12-hour race alongside Meyer Shank Racing.
Drivers who have tested positive for Covid 19 so far
Daniel Ricciardo is the eighth driver who has been tested positive for Covid 19. It was Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Kimi Raikkonen, and Nikita Mazepin who missed races in the past two years. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Pierre Gasly tested positive after the season finished.
Ricciardo will now take to the grid in the upcoming season opener at Bahrain. He is currently in his second season for McLaren in Formula 1. He had managed to score points for McLaren after nine years at the Italian Grand Prix last year.
