Ryan ten Doeschate has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intention to leave his role as India’s assistant coach after the India vs England ODI series. The former Netherlands cricketer was handpicked by India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, as they shared the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dressing room as players and coaches.
Wants to leave for personal reasons
Onboarded in July 2024, his 2-year contract ended somewhere around July 12 and 14. The 46-year-old doesn’t wish to extend it. According to Cricbuzz, Ryan isn’t dissatisfied with coaching India but wants to move on for personal reasons. Due to the constant travel, he can’t spend enough time with his family in London.
Ryan has three young sons and a working wife. Therefore, he wants to spend more time with them and is looking for a job that demands less travel. He had worked with the Kent County Cricket Club as their batting coach for one season and might return to the County Championship again.
Although a batter by trade, Ryan worked alongside T. Dilip in the fielding department. He’s also said to help cricketers with the mental aspect of the game. Gambhir shares a close personal and professional bond with him and has always heaped praise on him.
Gautam Gambhir yet to approve Ryan ten Doeschate’s departure
Ryan has informed the BCCI about his desire to leave after the India vs England 3rd ODI on July 19, but neither the board nor Gambhir has agreed yet. The Indian head coach might try to persuade him to stay right now. The next big assignment for the Men in Blue will be the away tour of New Zealand, and Gambhir might urge him to stay on until then.
However, the Indian head coach could urge him to stay with the team until the 2027 ODI World Cup itself. But that’s 15 months away. Whether Ryan can hold on till then seems a tough ask. One can’t forget that Gambhir himself will be in danger if India doesn’t do well in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, both of which are away Test tours.
