The India men’s cricket team is 0-6 in their last 7 matches. The only match they didn’t lose was washed out. The Men in Blue need to get out of the losing funk. Will that be easy? India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill certainly believes it won’t be tough. One must remember that India was losing T20Is.
Shubman Gill unbothered by T20I defeat
The two formats couldn’t be further apart. Aside from playing with a white ball, there isn’t any similarity. England scored 257 runs in 20 overs at the Rose Bowl. Many times, teams don’t even manage that in ODIs. Another differentiating factor is the opposition’s performance. England was ranked 2nd in T20Is before the series, while they are 8th in ODIs.
One of the biggest factors was Jasprit Bumrah’s absence. The ace pacer was rested for the Ireland and England T20Is and returns to the 50-over format after November 2023. Then you have experienced batters like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Gill himself returning.
“I don’t think there will be any impact of the T20 series on this one. This is a different format, and the team knows what it has to achieve. Different format, different atmosphere,” Gill told reporters in Birmingham.
What might hurt India
Perhaps the only issue will be the bad experiences of those who were part of the T20I series. The 8 players – Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav – didn’t have the best of times.
Shreyas did well as a batter but lost 6 matches as captain. Others like Sundar and Prasidh didn’t even play all matches. Then you have Prince, who was tonked all over the park in the last 2 games. Axar was underwhelming with both bat and ball, while Dube might play his first ODI since July 2024.
