Cricket has witnessed all kinds of interruptions over the years. Rain has halted matches. Bad light has forced early finishes. Bees, dogs and even snakes have brought play to a temporary standstill. But a North East Premier League fixture in England produced one of the strangest scenes in recent memory when an 800kg bull wandered onto the field and refused to leave.
The league match between Burnopfield Cricket Club and Hetton Lyons had to be abandoned after the runaway bull entered the ground and repeatedly charged around the playing area. It was a humorous distraction that could’ve caused some pain to players, officials and spectators.
According to a BBC report, the animal had escaped from a nearby farm and travelled approximately 1.6 kilometres before reaching the cricket ground. Efforts to remove the bull proved unsuccessful, despite multiple attempts by local farmers and the animal’s owner.
Farmers, police and even a cow fail to remove bull
The bull’s owner arrived at the venue and attempted to guide the animal away from the ground. In an unusual attempt to lure it back, a cow was brought to the venue. However, even that plan failed as the frightened animal continued to roam around the outfield.
Burnopfield club director Martin Oswell admitted that nobody initially expected the incident to affect the match itself. “At first it was quite novel, it was quite funny, but we never thought it was going to impact on our game being abandoned. We couldn’t get rid of it. There was no chance that the game was going to restart before the cut-off time,” Oswell told the BBC.
The situation became more serious when the bull reportedly struck one of the farmers trying to contain it. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. “The bull was very frightened, it was spooked. Two farmers tried to stop the bull and it actually hit one of them. He was OK but the beast probably weighed about 800kg. It was a juvenile bull, incredibly fit, athletic and, quite frankly, quite dangerous,” Oswell added.
Police eventually arrived at the scene, although the bull ultimately left the area on its own before any further action was required.
Animal interruptions aren’t exactly new in cricket, especially at club level. Dogs wander onto grounds all the time, bees have halted international matches, and snakes have even turned up near the boundary. One of the strangest cases involved African subterranean termites swarming a cricket field. And believe it or not, this isn’t the first time cattle have caused chaos in England. In 2017, a village game between Kerridge and Mossley was stopped when a cow walked onto the pitch and charged toward players before wandering off.
