Former Indian cricketer and domestic stalwart Wasim Jaffer has been named Hyderabad new mentor ahead of the 2026/27 season. The ex-Mumbai batter, who was a part of Vidarbha in the previous season, serving as the batting consultant for the side. Jaffer has been appointed as Hyderabad’s mentor for a period of two years. Interestingly, Wasim’s appointment has reportedly been made on the insistence of Ambati Rayudu, who recently took over as the team’s head of cricket operations.

As per Cricinfo, Jaffer’s appointment as Hyderabad mentor is the latest initiative taken by the Rayudu-led Hyderabad Cricket Association team since the latter took charge in May earlier this year. Rayudu believes that Wasim could bring the much-needed ‘winning mindset’ to the team. The ex-Mumbai batter will work in close quarters with both the senior team and the age-group teams.
The former Indian cricketer has taken up various coaching roles since retiring from all forms of cricket in 2020. In the past, he has coached Uttarakhand, Punjab and Odisha, apart from serving as a batting consultant for Vidarbha. Jaffer has also served as the batting coach consultant for Bangladesh and IPL franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS).

Jaffer’s entry comes after Hyderabad’s miserable performance in the Ranji Trophy last season. The team managed to win just one match, lost two and drew four games out of the 7 matches, and finished fourth on the standings in Group D. Their only win came against Himachal Pradesh as they trumped the opposition by 4 wickets.
In Vijay Hazare Trophy, Hyderabad failed to make it past the group stage while the team was denied a final berth in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy by Haryana due to net run-rate.
