Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will become the youngest debutant in Indian cricket history when he wears the blue colors in international stage.

An entire series hype was built around a 15-year-old. Yes, that’s the attraction and craze that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi commands after a heroic start to his competitive career. An outstanding IPL 2026 has changed everything for him. For the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sooryavanshi won everything that was to be won (apart from the title, of course). At an individual level, he was out of this world, smashing world-class bowlers left, right and centre.

Then, Ajit Agarkar rewarded him with a place in the Indian T20I side. And it was deservedly earned by Sooryavanshi. He quickly became the face of the IPL and the fact that India A’s tri-series was live telecasted just because of his presence says a lot. When India landed in Belfast for a quick two-game T20I series, everyone was hyped about Sooryavanshi’s potential debut. He was earmarked to create history. He is on the verge of breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s long-time record of being the youngest Indian debutant. Sooryavanshi will break it. But he didn’t on Friday as the Indian management chose to delay his debut.

Why Sooryavanshi should wait for India debut

After all the hype around him in Ireland, India stuck to their dependable guns. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, three pillars of the Indian T20I batting, continued after the Indian batting coach hinted at an “unfair” remark. It was a sensible decision anyhow.

India couldn’t have dropped or rested anyone to make way for Sooryavanshi. Samson literally won India the T20 World Cup 2026, after three iconic knocks in do-or-die matches. Abhishek Sharma is the world no. 1 T20I ranked batter and showed his class by hammering a 19-ball 50 in the opening T20I. Meanwhile, Kishan is also in the peak of his powers, striking at an insane strike rate of 191.72 in T20s so far this year.

So, naturally, India had no choice but to keep Sooryavanshi as a water boy. As much as fans want to see the young lad represent India on the highest stage, there’s a deadlock present. After a humiliating loss to Ireland in the first T20I, India are in desperate need of a turnaround.

Shreyas Iyer has lost his first game as T20I skipper and he would bank on his already famed stars to deliver in the second T20I on Sunday. Also, India don’t need to panic as well. You have your World champion stars who gave another T20 title to cherish earlier this year. Just to appease the fans, the management shouldn’t hand the debut to Sooryavanshi. His time will definitely come. Just as Ravichandran Ashwin mentioned, it would definitely be unfair on the current bunch of players to get benched without any reason.

Yes, Sooryavanshi’s hype is all worth it. Some of his highlights are mentioned below.

Why is everyone talking about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

  • 15 years, 91 days if he debuts against Ireland
  • Can become India’s youngest-ever international, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record
  • IPL 2026: 776 runs, Orange Cap, MVP and Emerging Player
  • Strike rate: 237.30 across the IPL 2026 season
  • 72 sixes, the most by any batter in a single T20 tournament
  • Fastest List A fifty ever: 11 balls for India A against Sri Lanka A
  • U-19 World Cup final: 175 off just 80 balls against England

However, there are no straightforward ways by which Gautam Gambhir can slot Sooryavanshi right now. Samson and Kishan failed in the first T20I. However, one poor outing doesn’t tell you anything. They deserve an opportunity to bounce back and should play over Sooryavanshi in the second T20I. After this, India plays five T20Is against England. There, Sooryavanshi should ideally make his debut, with India resting any one top-order player in the latter half of the series.

Youngest India debutants in history ft. Tendulkar

PlayerAge at India Debut
Sachin Tendulkar16 years, 205 days
Parthiv Patel17 years, 153 days
Maninder Singh17 years, 222 days
Harbhajan Singh17 years, 288 days
Laxmi Ratan Shukla17 years, 320 days

Born on March 27, 2011, Sooryavanshi will beat Tendulkar’s youngest debutant record as long as he makes his India debut by October 18, 2027. So, that’s unquestionable.
