It’s a historic day for Bangladesh cricket. The Tigers have claimed their first-ever ODI series win against Australia. 23 years after the two teams played a bilateral series against each other, Bangladesh has finally beaten them, home or away, in a series.
Bangladesh claim maiden ODI series win over Australia
On June 9, Bangladesh claimed their second-ever ODI victory over Australia at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. Granted, Australia was without some of their biggest stars in Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Marsh, but still the Aussies packed a punch.
It took 21 years for Bangladesh to win an ODI against the 6-time Cricket World Cup champions. Two days later, the Tigers had one-upped themselves. Australia has toured Bangladesh twice before, in 2006 and 2011. On both occasions, the Aussies returned home undefeated.
The third time wasn’t the same. Bangladesh now had a pace trio that could rival Australia in Taskin Ahmed, Nahid Rana, and Mustafizur Rahman. The Aussie batters were bounced out, beaten for pace, and rocked on a low-bouncing surface in Dhaka. The ever-so-reliable spin was backed up by pace and a newfound consistency by batters.
Nahid stole the limelight with his short and intimidating bowling in the first ODI, while the second game was a collective performance, with all batters and bowlers firing together. Prior to the 3-match series, Bangladesh had won just 1 of 22 matches against Australia. It might not sound like a major improvement, but the context of the two wins is immense.
