Tamim Iqbal was appointed head of a committee which looked into allegations of political favouritism, malpractice and abuse of power inside the BCB.

Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the 21st President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The former Bangladesh captain was appointed as the interim chief of the BCB after the Bangladesh government dissolved the previous BCB board of directors under Aminul Islam after allegations of political favouritism, malpractice, and abuse of power in the board election emerged after the previous BCB elections in October 2025.

Tamim Iqbal: New BCB President

Tamim was appointed head of the ad hoc committee charged with taking over the Bangladesh board. Earlier today, the BCB held elections in Dhaka, and Tamim was unanimously appointed the President for a 4-year term, including the 2 months he was already in charge.

“There are a lot of things, loopholes, and if we all agree together (about constitutional reform), we will discuss them in the next AGM. This is not like a board of 12 or 13 people where one person says something, and it is done. We have to deal with 1972 councillors. So, they also have to agree. For the betterment of Bangladesh cricket, if any constitutional changes are needed, we will definitely discuss and consider them. It is very new for me because I still have to mix with all these people. I may not know more than half of them. I met them for the first time. Give us some time, let us discuss, and then we will find out where improvements are needed,” Tamim said.

The elections were held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, the BCB headquarters. 23 directors and 2 government representatives have been elected to the 25-member body. 88 votes were cast to elect said individuals, with divisions and districts of the country in the first category, Dhaka clubs in the second, and former cricketers, captains, education boards, and others in the third. Tamim’s one of the 12 directors in the second category. Fahim Sinha has been elected as one of the two vice-presidents, with the second position still vacant.

“I hope we can be as transparent as possible. Because I am sure I do not want any of my board members to do anything that makes us controversial. From my side and from the whole board’s side, we will try to act with full honesty. Even then, I am sure we will make mistakes. We are humans, we are bound to make mistakes. But how quickly we can fix those mistakes is what I look forward to. I will share my plans with you step by step from time to time. Some work I have already started from the ad-hoc committee stage. Hopefully we can complete those quickly,” he said.

BCCI-BCB relationship to improve

Last month, Tamim spoke about improving the relationship with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Last year, the relationship between India and Bangladesh turned sour. India’s white-ball tour was postponed to 2026. Things worsened after Mustafizur Rahman was released by the BCCI from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

In this regard, Tamim spoke about having a good rapport with current BCCI President Mithun Manhas and seemed certain about the resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Bangladesh. The series, slated for September, was set to be played in Mirpur and Chattogram.
