Is it official? The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain. It seems all but certain that he’ll replace Suryakumar Yadav. If that happens, it’ll be confirmed on June 6 by Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, and Devajit Saikia, BCCI Secretary, in Mumbai.
Shreyas Iyer confirmed as India’s T20I captain, but not by BCCI
However, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has confirmed that Shreyas has become India’s new skipper in the shortest format. For the unaware, Shreyas is employed by BPCL as a key sportsperson under their Sports Promotion Board, like several other cricketers from Mumbai, including Suryakumar himself.
A day before the BCCI holds a press conference to perhaps confirm the appointment for the away tours of Ireland and England starting June 26, BPCL congratulated Shreyas on the momentous occasion.
“Leadership is about inspiring confidence, embracing responsibility, and bringing out the best in the team. Congratulations to BPCian Shreyas Iyer on being announced as Captain of the T20 Team. His consistency, composure, and ability to lead from the front have made him one of the most exciting leaders in the game today.
As he takes on this new responsibility, BPCL proudly extends its support and best wishes for the season ahead. We look forward to witnessing inspiring leadership, outstanding performances, and unforgettable moments on the field. Here’s to a season filled with passion, teamwork, determination, and excellence. Wishing Shreyas Iyer every success as he leads the team into an exciting new chapter,” BPCL wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

In the past two days, reports have stated that Shreyas will be named India’s next T20I captain. While Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan were also considered, the selectors and management ultimately chose Shreyas to succeed Suryakumar, who may not be included in the squad for the Ireland and England series.
