Expectations are always high when you’re the defending champions, but New Zealand is the kind of team, which perhaps thrives when the focus is on the others, and not on them. Though a force to reckon with, in the women’s format, they are never quite there but also right up their, skills-wise. In short, they are just the bunch that would keep you nervous till the very end, notwithstanding the result.
The only miss for the White Ferns would be the absence of off-spinner Eden Carson, who is out due to an elbow injury. She has 39 wickets in 37 matches, at an economy of under 7; and could have been a handful in the English conditions, which are close to the NZ conditions. It’s a team that easily rates 7/10, who are capable of achieving well beyond their potential.
Team New Zealand Strengths
The Kerr sisters: Though the new all-format skipper, Amelie Kerr failed in the T20I series vs England a few days back, she was in top form in the ODI series vs SA. On April 1, she had gone on to score a mammoth 179. Then against England too, she got one 55 in and ODI. Overall in 99 T20Is, she has scored 1925 runs at a strike rate of 118, and picked up 106 wickets.
On the other hand, Jess Kerr is having a great time with the ball. In just 2026 alone, she has picked 14 wickets in 11 encounters, where her economy has be under 6.

Overall pace attack: With the likes of Lea Tahuhu, Sophie Devine, Jess, and Rosemary Mair, it looks a threatening attack. Tahuhu is a beast of pace bowling, and has 99 wickets in 102 matches, while Devine has 128 in 154. It looks like, the team would go with three pacers… but it depends only on the conditions on the day.
Weaknesses
Spin attack: Even though the tournament is in England, but you still need some good spinners, who can not only pick wickets, but also lead the charge in stopping the runs. Except for Melie Kerr, the department looks thin. She was excellent in the 2024 WC edition, where she picked up 15 wickets at an economy of 4.85, but a bad day for her, could well mean a bad day for her team as well. There is a certain Nensi Patel in the side, who has been excellent in the matches she has played so far (economy of 4.04 only), but it remains to be seen, if she will be picked or not.
Opportunities
Last push for Tahuhu, Devine, Bates: Let us just say, this would be the last T20 World Cup for the NZ legends, and they would leave no stone unturned to get the trophy home, again. Bates is the highest run-getter in all the editions combined, having scored 1216 in 42 matches, at an average of 31, including 8 fifties.

Devine has scored 785 in 38, at an average of 26. On bowling front, she has picked up 29 wickets as well. Tahuhu has 21 wickets in 23 matches, where her economy has been 6.34 only.
Relatively easy group: They are placed in Group B, which looks easier to conquer. Except for England, there isn’t a difficult team. Yes, they have bad days, but they should fancy their chances against West Indies, Ireland, Sri Lanka and Scotland, to reach the semis.
Threats
Team confidence: They are coming on the back of a 1-2 series loss against England, who happen to be in the same group. A defeat again from the same team, can potentially ruin their confidence. Batting looked slightly off as well, where only once could they breach the 150-mark. IN fact, in the last match at Hove, they were bundled out for 80.
Pressure of expectations? Will the team feel the pinch, coming in the tournament as the defending champs? Let’s admit, they are no Australia, who win cups at will. With the history they created last time around, the expectations would have grown within the bunch, if not among the fans.
