Australia lost to South Africa in the semifinals of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024. Since then, they've played just 12 Women T20Is.

Australia women’s cricket will enter as the strongest contender for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. That’s the reputation one earns after lifting the trophy on 6 out of 9 occasions. The expectations will be extremely high. A new captain, a legend retiring, and historic non-success in England won’t matter.

On June 13, Australia will kick off their campaign against last edition’s finalists, South Africa. Drawn in Group A, Bangladesh, the Netherlands, India and Pakistan will be their other opponents. InsideSport will try to have a crack at why Australia are the overwhelming favourites and what can stop them.

Strengths

Phoebe Litchfield, Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney are three of the best T20 batters. Not only do they score faster than the average top-order batter, but they maintain a healthy average while doing so. The plethora of all-rounders, 9 in total, means their batting lasts until 9 at the minimum. Teams have one or two quality all-rounders, but Australia can fit 5 without breaking a sweat. Similarly, no other teams have the batting depth that Australia possesses.

Australia also has variety in bowling. Right and left-arm pacers, left-arm orthodox spinners, off-spinners and leg-spinners. Name it, they have it all. Moreover, most of these bowling options can bat. Alana King, who bats at 9 for them, has a half-century in an ODI World Cup. Even proper batters don’t have one.

Weaknesses

Alyssa Healy’s absence might be costly. She has the most runs for Australia, 1008 runs, in the Women’s T20 World Cup, and no Aussie batter struck faster than her, 129.39, with a minimum of 100 runs to their name. You can’t buy that experience. Moreover, she was a known big-match player. Case in point, her 75-run knock in the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup final against India at the MCG.

Another issue that Australia might have is game time. Since the last edition, they have played just 12 WT20Is. That isn’t enough. The team hasn’t played much together. They aren’t out of practice, with most of them playing in the Women’s Premier League, Women’s Big Bash League (BBL) or Women’s The Hundred. But they haven’t taken the field as one unit often. Only one of their bowlers has played more than 10 WT20Is. Darci Brown isn’t even in the squad.

Opportunities

Australia has lost the last two ICC events. That last happened in 2009. They have a point to prove now. India and South Africa are threatening them. Legends like Meg Lanning and Healy have retired. Some others, like Ellyse Perry or Mooney, are closer to retirement than ever before. It’s time for Australia to show who’s the boss again. Moreover, Australia has never won an ICC event in England.

Threats

Sophie Molineux took over as Australia’s all-format captain on January 28. Coming into the Women’s T20 World Cup, she’s led in just 7 matches (1 WODI and 6 WT20Is). She guided the Melbourne Renegades to the title as captain in Women’s BBL 2024, and her exploits were one of the reasons she was chosen as Healy’s successor.

However, a 1-2 defeat to India Women and a belief that Ash Gardner was the better captaincy candidate than her do create some doubts. In recent times, Molineux has had injury issues as well. We also don’t know whether the side will gel together with her at the helm.
