Australia, who are known to test out its talents in domestic toil first, is set to make an exception for an exciting name. Nineteen-year-old Ollie Peake is set to make his international debut in the first ODI against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on Saturday, becoming Australia’s youngest specialist batter in men’s ODI history and breaking a record previously held by Ricky Ponting.
Captain Josh Inglis confirmed ahead of the series opener that Peake would receive his maiden ODI cap alongside fast bowler Billy Stanlake, who returns to international cricket for the first time since 2019.
At 19 years and 261 days, Peake will become Australia’s fourth-youngest men’s ODI cricketer overall. More significantly, he will surpass Ponting’s long-standing mark of 20 years and 58 days to become the youngest specialist batter to represent Australia in the format.
“It’s incredibly exciting for Peakey, he’s been great value around the group so far,” Inglis said while attending the pre-match press conference in Rawalpindi. “We’ve seen what he’s done over the last couple of years, and he really deserves to be here.”

Why Australia are so excited about Ollie Peake
Born in 2006, Peake has been regarded as one of Australian cricket’s brightest prospects for several years. The Victorian batter has rapidly climbed through the ranks, ticking off milestone after milestone before turning 20. He has already represented Australia at the Under-19 World Cup, captained the national youth side, played for Australia A, made his Sheffield Shield debut and featured in the Big Bash League.
While his List A stats might not immediately jump off the page, averaging 36.75 with a highest score of 55 not out, selectors have repeatedly spoken about qualities that numbers don’t fully capture.
Peake has earned praise for his temperament, game awareness and maturity at the crease. Coaches and talent scouts have also spoke about his leadership qualities, which were on display when he captained Australia during this year’s Under-19 World Cup campaign. His ton in the semi-final against England went in vain as well.
The fact that Australia have fast-tracked him into the ODI setup despite limited senior experience shows just how highly he is rated.
Australia forced into fresh-look ODI side vs PAK
Peake’s debut comes during a period of transition for Australia, who are without several first-choice stars for the Pakistan series.
Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh are all unavailable due to injury concerns or IPL commitments. Marsh was ruled out earlier this week after suffering an ankle injury during the IPL.
“It’s obviously disappointing to lose our skipper,” Inglis said of Marsh. “He’s a big part of the group, and he’s obviously a fantastic player as well. “It’s unfortunate for Mitch to miss out on this tour.”
Australia’s pace attack will also have a fresh look, with Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith and Billy Stanlake expected to shoulder much of the responsibility.
