The toss between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2026 was forced to be called for a second time after the match referee did not hear the captain’s call. RR captain Riyan Parag initially called it heads but the toss turned out to be tails. However, the match referee – Prakash Bhatt – decided that he did not hear the call, and instead decided to redo the toss. Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bat first.
Toss done twice during IPL 2026, Qualifier 2
While Shubman Gill flipped the coin, with Riyan Parag calling heads, the coin ended up as tails. However, the match referee claimed that he did not hear the GT captain’s call, and hence decided to redo the toss. Parag called it right in the next attempt, as he decided to bat first in the contest with an unchanged side.
“We would have batted first as well. 40 overs of play has already been [played] on the wicket and we didn’t think it’s gonna change much, but unfortunately, I don’t think the referee heard the call from Riyan,” Shubman Gill said.
A similar incident occurred in the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka as well. The coin was notably tossed twice due to a mix-up. During the first attempt, match referee Jeff Crowe couldn’t hear Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara’s call, causing both Sangakkara and Indian captain MS Dhoni to believe they had won. They agreed to redo the flip, after which Sri Lanka officially won the toss.
