The fuel shortage created due to the prolonged West Asia crisis is finally showing its effect in India as well. It just just a few days back, that PM Modi advised one and all to conserve fuel in these tough times, and now on Sunday, questions seem to be raised on the energy consumption during the IPL 2026. The Chamber of Trade and Industry head, Brijesh Goyal wrote to the sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya, to reschedule the IPL, and now league chairperson Arun Dhumal has responded to it.
CTI demands rescheduling of IPL 2026
As per a report in the New Indian Express, Dhumal said they will look into the matter, if the directive comes from the government of India. “So far, there has not been any communication to BCCI to my knowledge,” Dhumal told TNIE. “Independent agencies might have their views on certain (things), but we are accountable to the Government of India. If anything comes from the government, we will look into it and certainly adhere to the directions,” he added.
Directive needed from the government
As far as the letter goes, it demanded that the venues be restricted, and happen behind closed doors, keeping in view the austerity measures. It also read, that by now, the teams would have already travelled lakhs of km, during the IPL 2026. “While every government department, politician, officer, common citizen is trying to avoid wasteful expenditure on the advice of Prime Minister Modi, in these difficult times, IPL is the only event which seems to be untouched by any crisis at the moment,” read the CTI’s press statement.
“Cutting down on air travel, matches without spectators and at a limited venues will save millions of litres of fuel, petrol and diesel and reduce the burden on the country. Even during the pandemic, the BCCI did the same,” Goyal argued. By May 18, 62 matches would be completed in the tournament, with 8 more to play in league stages, followed by two qualifiers, one eliminator and a final on May 31.
The remaining fixtures will be played in different venues like – Chennai, Jaipur, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Mumbai, Dharamsala, and New Chandigarh.
