In a big move, the BCCI may soon convert the U-23 men’s 50-over competition to T20 format, as per a report in Cricbuzz. Though a formal communication is yet to be sent to the state associations, but the move looks like a done deal; the change is likely to come from the next season itself.
No U23 50-over competition?
“It is still in the early stages, as opinions of state associations and a few other stakeholders will be asked before taking a call. But if it’s done then it will happen from the new domestic season (2026-27),” a source told to PTI. The current tournament is called the State A Championship — which has two halves — Elite division and the Plate.
The reason for this possible shift, remains unclear though. Perhaps it could be address the increasing popularity of the format, or the diminishing one of the 50 overs. Plus, what could have contributed to this is, there is no T20 competition at this level for now. While Tamil Nadu are the Elite champions by beating UP at the Wankhede Stadium, in Plate Championships, Meghalaya beat Mizoram at Mullanpur last year.
Just to talk about a few stats from the Men’s U23 State A Trophy’s last edition — M Choudhary from RCA had emerged as the highest run-getter with 617 in 9 games. His average there was a massive 102. RCA’s Karan Lamba was at the second position with 588 in 9 matches. In the bowling department, Karan Umatt ended with most — 21 wickets in 7 matches.
What remains intact is — the red ball tournament at the U23 level, called the CK Nayudu Trophy. There too Tamil Nadu had won the elite championship, where they beat Maharashtra.
