CSK had a potential 65% chance of qualifying for the IPL 2026 Playoffs if they had beaten LSG today.

Mitchell Marsh’s onslaught has caused significant damage to Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) chances of qualifying for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 Playoffs. The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) opener was fresh off a 111-run knock at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, having found form after LSG was eliminated from the tournament.

Mitchell Marsh’s heavy blow

But LSG could still play spoilsport for other teams. After Shivam Dube’s cameo took CSK to 187, there was hope for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team. On a 3-match winning streak, anything looked possible for the Yellow Army. But Marsh had other ideas. The Australian opener took Anshul Kamboj and Spencer Johnson down in the powerplay, bringing up his fifty in just 20 balls.

At 86/0 after 6 overs, the chase ending in a victory looked inevitable. Josh Inglis was struggling, but Marsh’s fireworks didn’t stop. At the halfway mark, LSG needed just 64 runs. When Marsh walked back, via an unlucky dismissal at the non-striker’s end, the game was pretty much done. CSK tried to crawl back into the game, but it was already a bit too late.

CSK’s Playoffs qualification chances after LSG defeat

Had CSK managed to win, they would’ve had a 65% chance of qualifying for the IPL 2026 Playoffs. A 4th consecutive win could’ve taken them to third spot on the points table, marking the first time they were among the top four since the season started. At worst, CSK would’ve overtaken the Punjab Kings at the fourth spot. But that won’t be happening now.

Now, CSK has about a 1/4 chance to make the final four. The 5-time champions had the opportunity to distance themselves from Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals while reaching parity with the Sunrisers Hyderabad but that isn’t happening. In fact, they’ve dropped down to sixth from five. Now, they have to win the two remaining games and hope that others don’t outplay them.
