For the first time in IPL 2026, Axar Patel looked like Axar Patel the batter again. And Delhi Capitals desperately needed it. After enduring one of the worst batting phases of his IPL career, the DC captain finally produced something incredible with the bat, smashing a match-winning 56 off just 30 deliveries against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Dharamsala.
The innings not only kept Delhi alive in the playoff race but also showed why Axar has long been regarded as one of the most valuable multi-dimensional cricketers in T20 cricket. But within hours of the win, the BCCI punished the Delhi skipper.
BCCI fines Axar Patel for slow over-rate offence
On Tuesday morning, the IPL confirmed that Axar Patel had been fined INR 12 lakh after Delhi Capitals maintained a slow over-rate during their thrilling three-wicket victory over Punjab Kings.
The sanction came under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate offences. “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Axar Patel was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” the IPL said in an official statement.
“Delhi Capitals (DC) Captain Axar Patel has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during Match No. 55 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala.”

Axar finally delivers after horrible IPL 2026 with bat
Coming into the Punjab Kings clash, Axar’s numbers with the bat were shockingly poor. Before Monday night, he had scored just 44 runs in eight innings at an average of 6.28 and a strike rate of only 74.57. More bizarrely, he had managed only three boundaries all season despite batting multiple times in pressure situations.
From 2022 to 2025, Axar had become one of Delhi’s most reliable cricketers. During that period, he scored 963 runs at an average of 30.09 while striking at nearly 144, alongside taking 33 wickets. Only David Warner had scored more runs for DC in that timeframe.
But IPL 2026 had been a complete collapse with the bat. Part of the issue was tactical as well. Axar, who is traditionally stronger against spin than pace, repeatedly walked in during the powerplay against hard new-ball seam bowling. It completely neutralised his strengths.
Ironically, against Punjab Kings, he produced his best innings of the season without bowling a single over himself. In fact, no spin was bowled by either side throughout the match as both teams relied entirely on seamers in Dharamsala conditions. Yet Axar handled the pace challenge brilliantly. Perhaps the law of averages finally caught up.
The left-hander smashed 56 off 30 balls, striking eight boundaries and consistently taking on Punjab’s pace attack. More importantly, he played with clarity of punishing everything that came in his arc. David Miller complemented him perfectly with a quickfire 51, while Ashutosh Sharma’s 24 off just 10 deliveries finished the chase with one over to spare. The win lifted Delhi Capitals to 10 points from 12 matches and kept their fading playoff hopes mathematically alive.
