Discover how the Ukrainian military and the Vitruhan training center are using a modified version of GTA V to train FPV drone operators for combat.

One of the most popular video games that has ever been created is now being used by the Ukrainian army for training the future generations of drone pilots in an innovative way. As per some recent sources, Grand Theft Auto V has now been turned into an extremely useful FPV drone simulator by Ukrainian military officials.

As revealed by reports, the innovation was created by “Vitruhan” (WeTrueGun), a Ukrainian training center focused on developing skills in military drone operators and creation of special UAV platforms. The team was able to implement an advanced FPV drone simulation right into the open-world video game of Grand Theft Auto V. A recent video of a soldier controlling a virtual drone made waves on social networks.

The key benefit offered by the choice of GTA V is the huge map size as well as the absence of arbitrary limits set by the software, typical for simulators available in ordinary use. With the freedom of movement in the virtual world, users can freely determine their routes for flying missions in the midst of the city, and also practice tracking mobile objects. The particular modification also provides advanced functionality, including thermal vision modes.

The most important thing is that in contrast to the typical games, the application does not utilize gaming controllers or regular computer keyboards. Special measures were taken by the developers to ensure compatibility with professional RC drones controllers like the Radiomaster TX16S MK3.

A Supplementary Tool for Drone Pilots

As impressive as the integration of GTA V is, however, the developers obviously do not wish to see this program replacing the need for physical practice altogether. Instead, it becomes an extremely useful addition to allow pilots to practice maneuverability safely and, perhaps, even to unwind a little before going into combat.

With modern war constantly evolving, it only goes to show how much commercial video games can be adapted for military use.
