MS Dhoni’s IPL 2026 return continues to be a waiting game. Just when it seemed like the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain was edging closer, the latest update has pushed the timeline a little further.
Dhoni has travelled to Hyderabad with the Chennai Super Kings squad, which, in itself, is a step forward. He had earlier skipped away trips to Bengaluru and Guwahati, so his presence with the team is a clear sign that recovery is moving in the right direction. But he is still not ready to take the field.
No return vs SRH, but Dhoni on road to recovery
As per RevSportz, despite joining the squad, Dhoni will not feature in the upcoming clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The decision is largely precautionary. CSK are not willing to rush him back, especially given his recent injury concerns.
He had suffered a calf issue in the lead-up to the season, which initially ruled him out for the first few weeks. Since then, there were conflicting updates, some suggesting he was close, others indicating a longer wait. This latest development clears that up to an extent.
Dhoni has been batting regularly in the nets and working on his range hitting, but match fitness, particularly keeping wickets for 20 overs, remains the bigger hurdle. At 44, and with recurring lower-body issues, CSK are understandably cautious.
If everything goes to plan, Dhoni’s comeback is now expected sometime next week. The two possible fixtures being looked at are the away game against Mumbai Indians on April 23 and the home match against Gujarat Titans on April 26.
