Currently, Sachin Tendulkar remains the youngest cricketer to make debut for India, aged 16 years and 205 days. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can break his record.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking to jump the gun on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has lit up the IPL with his once-in-a-generation talent. If him taking down the world’s best bowlers wasn’t enough, his tender age of just 15 years is a stunning fact that doesn’t feel right. But that’s how the Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener has dazzled so far. Now, the BCCI is aiming to reward him and fast-track the Bihar-born lad for international cricket.

As per the Indian Express, Sooryavanshi is deemed to be picked for India’s squad when the Men in Blue play their first overseas series post IPL 2026. That means Sooryavanshi might be picked in the two-match T20I series against Ireland. The T20 World Cup champions are slated to play two games against Ireland on June 26 and 28 in Belfast.

If picked, Sooryavanshi could become the youngest-ever debutant to play for India, beating Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record. On June 26, Sooryavanshi will just be 15 years and 91 days old. Meanwhile, Tendulkar made his India debut when he was 16 years and 205 days old.

Sooryavanshi to beat Sachin Tendulkar?

India produces massive batting talent. The pipeline just continues to give but sometimes, it throws in some serious, serious talent. Basically, once-in-a-generation prodigies. Sachin Tendulkar was the last one, who made his international debut in 1989. Against the searing pace bowling unit of Pakistan, Tendulkar was peppered but never quit. He then went on to become the greatest batter to have ever played the game.

Now, it is time for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old has already achieved heights that many 30-year-olds have never managed to do. At  14 years and 23 days, he recorded one of the fastest IPL hundreds (in 35 balls), that too, against a bowling that featured Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Rashid Khan, and Prasidh Krishna. This season, he has already smashed two 15-ball fifties as well.

Sooryavanshi has also smashed centuries in Australia, England and South Africa. He has basically obliterated under-19 cricket despite being way younger than other individuals. He led India to their sixth title as a key opener and was named Player of the Tournament for smashing 439 runs at 62.71 and 169.50, including a 175 (80) in the final.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can make his debut as a 15 years and 91 days old.

“He is in contention for the Ireland tour and the selectors have shortlisted his name along with those of many other players,” a source in the Indian cricket board confirmed.

BCCI’s desire to fast-track Sooryavanshi has come after he dominated the world’s best bowlers. If IPL 2025 was an exhibition of his talent, this season has shown that the teenager is here to stay for decades, with no second-season clouds. After starting the season by hammering down CSK bowlers, the southpaw won the battle against none other than Jasprit Bumrah, who was whacked for two sixes in just four balls by Sooryavanshi.

If that wasn’t enough, it was time for Josh Hazlewood, who is touted to be one of the best all-format bowlers currently. Facing RCB, Sooryavanshi killed a 200+ run chase in no time as he bludgeoned 26-ball 78, including a period where he hammered Hazlewood for 18 runs in just four balls.

Meanwhile, the report also suggests that if Sooryavanshi does get picked in Ireland and impresses, he will be considered for another low-profile T20I series, particularly Zimbabwe vs India. After India’s tour of UK, the Men in Blue will travel to Zimbabwe for three T20Is (July 23, 25 and 26).
