Nearly a decade after its initial release, the game that started the global Fortnite phenomenon is reaching its most significant milestone yet. Epic Games has officially announced that Fortnite: Save the World will transition to a free-to-play model. It will be available on April 16, 2026, inviting millions of new players to experience the original PvE (Player vs. Environment) survival adventure.
For years, the cooperative base-building mode was tucked behind a paywall, often overshadowed by its younger, titan-sized sibling, Battle Royale. However, this move signals a major revitalized effort by Epic Games to bring the “Homebase” experience to the masses.
Fortnite Save the World – Community Milestones and Pre-registration Rewards
To celebrate the launch, Epic is hosting a community-wide pre-registration event. New and returning players can visit the official Save the World portal to sign up and contribute to collective goals. As the registration count climbs, exclusive items will be unlocked for everyone who joins the effort:
- 300,000 Registrations: Kyle’s Construction Spray
- 700,000 Registrations: Jess Banner Icon
- 1,000,000 Registrations: The Legendary Snowstrike Hero (Ninja)
The Snowstrike Hero is a particularly exciting addition, featuring the North Star perk which allows Throwing Stars to freeze enemies, causing them to explode for significant water damage.
A “Thank You” to Long-Time Commanders
Epic isn’t forgetting the veteran players who have been “holding back the horde” since the beginning. Existing Save the World owners who purchased the game before the transition was announced (March 11, 2026) will receive a substantial “Thank You” bundle on launch day. This package includes:
- Superchargers for Heroes, Weapons, Traps, and Survivors.
- Recruitment Vouchers to unlock any Hero or Weapon of choice.
- 10,000 Gold to spend in the newly rebranded “Exchange” store.
Crucial Note for Founders: For those who hold “Founder” status from the game’s early access years, the ability to earn unlimited V-Bucks through Daily Quests and Storm Shield Defenses will remain an exclusive perk, even after the game goes free.
Where to Play
The free-to-play version will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Cloud Gaming. Notably, the game will also support the Nintendo Switch 2, though it remains unavailable on mobile devices and the original Nintendo Switch due to hardware limitations.
If you’ve ever wanted to explore the origins of Fortnite, build elaborate trap tunnels, and command a squad of heroes against the Storm, your time has finally come. Head over to save-the-world.fortnite.com to pre-register before the April 16 launch!
